What better climax for this scene than Vincent and Mia dancing? These two are in dangerous territory, and I like it!.If you have a hot topic that can spark off some conflict, play that card. Vincent actually brings up the Antwan story.Another reason to watch this story to the end. Plus, now we’ll be waiting for that joke to be revealed because of the importance it’s been given ( implicit promise again). Important set-up for the end of their story.

Mia refuses to tell Vincent the bad joke from her pilot.What’s more memorable than a 50’s-themed restaurant where everybody dresses and acts like luminaries from the era? Never settle for predictable. They don’t go and have dinner at McDonald’s or a generic French restaurant.We fear something bad is going to come out of this, so we wait for the other shoe to drop. Mia is flirty and Vincent doesn’t mind that much. Right away we see these two have chemistry. Same formula as the Jules-Vincent scene.Look no further than this brilliant scene for an example of that. The right tools (like a well-chosen piece of music) can push plot and character development at the same time.Talk about a memorable and eloquent intro. How do we show this? She’s playing with Vincent and keeping her eagle eye on him. Mia is the one on top in this relationship.Playful Mia has a weakness for nose candy.The subtext comes courtesy of Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man.” One piece of music can lift the most mundane scene to heavenly heights.(Or is she an antagonist of sorts? Still wondering about that) What a fantastic meeting! Vincent wants to keep the evening as innocent as possible.Don’t think every little plot detail needs its own scene. The more things you can accomplish in one scene, the better.Story should always come ahead of whatever interesting subject you have in mind. If anybody can think of anything else I’ll give you a gold medal.It’s relatively short, at least, but that makes little difference when we have a bunch of these stacked up.Why not merge the heroin-getting part with another scene to economize time?.The piercing talk, the heroin talk, and the car being keyed talk slow things down. The purpose of the scene is for Vincent to get the heroin that Mia will OD on.Have to admit, the whole spend-scenes-explaining-things, however interesting, is beginning to wear on my nerves.
